Who has acupuncture?

Anyone can use acupuncture to help with a specific medical problem or concern, a change in normal health, to reduce stress levels, and promote general wellbeing, or as a preventative medicine.  Used alongside conventional medicine, acupuncture can aid recovery and help to alleviate possible side-effects.  It can also be used to maximise IVF treatment, help to manage pregnancy, and alleviate general signs and symptoms often associated with pregnancy.  Acupuncture can help to induce labour and non-invasive acupressure can also be used to treat babies and children.

People often find old injuries and conditions helped with acupuncture, even though they came for treatment for a different reason.

Your first appointment

Will last 1½ hours, giving you ample opportunity to discuss the reason(s) you have come for treatment.  We will talk about your current health status, including general health patterns and any relevant medical history and current medical needs.  A physical assessment may also be appropriate.  Nora will assess your health feeling your pulses and observing your tongue.  This appointment will also include your first acupuncture treatment.

Receiving acupuncture

Specific points will be selected and fine, sterile, disposable, single-use needles will be inserted.  These will be retained for up to 20 minutes.  Other techniques may also be used, as described on the acupuncture page.

Does it hurt?

On insertion you may feel a slight tingling sensation or dull ache, but this will soon subside and most people feel very relaxed during their treatment.  Some even fall asleep.  Acupuncture needles are very fine, they are unlike hypodermic needles, which are much larger.

Frequency of treatment

This varies, as it is dependent on the reason(s) you are receiving treatment.  Some people only need a few treatments, while others may require a longer and more thorough course of treatments.  Usually more recent/acute conditions clear quicker than more established/chronic conditions.
